Aus Open 2020: Gauff, Osaka Grand Slam Rematch
Coco’s round two fixture against Romania’s Sorana Cirstea started out poorly, serving out three double faults and fifteen unforced errors to drop the first set 6-4. Redemption came for the 15-year-old when she steadied the ship to force a match decider. The final set seemed like it was over when she went down three games to love but pushed through to level the set 3 all from which they both held their serves till Coco converted a break point at 5-5 to lead 6-5, eventually winning the set 7-5. Her victory set her up with a round three fixture and equally a grand slam rematch against Osaka. Osaka slid right past Gauff 6-3, 6-0 at the third round of US Open ’19, definitely aware of Coco’s growth since then. During her post match on-court interview, Coco was overwhelmed with all the love the crowd poured out while she played.
“ You really made me believe, it’s really emotional because I never thought this would happen to me, so many people supporting me so thank you.“ She said.
An all round improved player with every grand slam competition she plays at, Coco spoke on her third round meet with Osaka saying “I played her at US Open so I know what to expect. I’m excited for a good match, I think she’s a great competitor on and off the court.”
In other news, Djokovic outlasted Japanese Ito Tatsuma in straight sets. Caroline Wozniacki still going strong defeating Ukrainian Dayana Yastremska 7-5, 7-5 in her last competition on tour following her announcement to retire after the Australian Open. On Rod Laver Arena, Serena Williams leads one set up against Tamara Zidansek.
