Aus Open 2020: Novak Djokovic Wins Men’s Singles Title… Again!
Novak Djokovic fought through a nail biting five-set match that lasted for over four hours to defeat Thiem Dominic 6-4, 4-6, 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 lifting his eighth Australian Open trophy and his 17th grand slam title.
Thiem had won three matches out of their last four before this final. During his prematch conference, Thiem spoke about how he hoped to play the same way going into this match. The opening set was a morale booster for the Serbian as he came started the set with a break leading the set 2-0, Djokovic kept on the momentum charging through with a 4-2 over Dominic but the Austrian took the game back to level the set at 4-4 however Thiem hit a double fault while Djokovic was serving for the set.
Djokovic as well as Thiem started the second set with holds to love on their opening service games. Thiem went a step further to take the lead when Djokovic was warned for a two-time violation. That certainly affected his game as he went on to drop six consecutive games to trail Thiem with two sets to one. An early break in the fifth was all Djokovic needed to be reunited back with the Norman Brookes cup. Djokovic is now third on the list of ATP players with the most grand slam title behind Roger Federer (1) and Rafael Nadal (2). In his post match interview on court, Djokovic paid tribute to his friend Basketball icon Kobe Bryant while thanking his family and fans for the unwavering support. The Serbian is now back to being Number one in the world following this achievement.
