Manchester United vs Norwich Preview

Manchester United vs Norwich City Preview: Team news and injury updates, stats, betting tips and predictions

Manchester United will look to put their Carabao cup woes behind them when they play hosts to Norwich this weekend. The Red Devils lost 1-3 to bitter rivals Manchester City at Old Trafford on Tuesday night, but will look to get back to winning ways after playing a 0-0 draw at Wolves in the FA cup as well as losing 2-0 to Arsenal in the first league game of 2020. The Red Devils are still fifth however, 5 points off the top four.

As we have frequently seen this season, it has been a case of one step forward and two steps backwards for Ole and his men. It is a surprise that they are still 5th and are in a race for top four, knowing they have only managed 8 league wins so far after 21 games played. Manchester United currently have 31 points, a whopping 27 points behind rivals Liverpool in first position. It does not help that they are only 4 points ahead of Arsenal in 10th and a loss will make them spiral further down the log. This season, Manchester United are known for making average teams look spectacular, and getting expected wins have proven to be somewhat difficult. With expectations and morale low at Old Trafford, facing a struggling Norwich City side will be seen as an opportunity to take another step forward (again).

Norwich City are not without their own struggles. Last season’s championship winners have not managed a league win since November 2019 (against a struggling Everton side). Daniel Farke and his men have only managed 3 league wins all season, and look to be heading back to the Championship. They are at the bottom of the league with just 14 points, 5 points behind Watford in 19th place. Their away form is truly awful, having only picked 5 points from 10 games, conceding 16 goals in the process whilst scoring just 5.

The Canaries come into this match off the back of successive league draws with Tottenham and Crystal Palace, though, and they also recorded an impressive 4-2 victory over Preston North End in the FA Cup on Saturday. Expectedly, they aren’t favorites for this game, and will rightly be more concerned about the next fixture after this one, a home meeting with fellow strugglers Bournemouth. However, with Manchester United’s reputation for making seemingly easy fixtures look difficult, a Norwich City win or draw will not be totally unimaginable.

Team news and injury updates:

Manchester United: The Red Devils are still without the services of Scott McTominay and Paul Pogba so it is expected that Fred and Nemanja Matic will continue their partnership in the 4-2-3-1 set up.

Harry Maguire is also injured amidst fears of being out for the rest of the season after tearing a hip muscle. The English defender joins Scott McTominay, Paul Pogba, Eric Bailly, Marcos Rojo, Axel Tuanzebe and Timothy Fosu-Mensah on the sidelines.

This means Phil Jones will likely partner with Victor Lindelof. Youngster Brandon Williams might get a nod to start after a positive showing against Man City midweek.

Possible XI: De Gea; Wan-Bissaka, Lindelof, Jones, Williams; Matic, Fred; James, Pereira, Rashford; Martial.

Norwich City: For manager Daniel Farke, his main concern surrounds Pukki, who has scored nine Premier League goals this season. The 29-year-old did not train on Thursday as he battles a thigh injury, and while he could make the squad, it seems unlikely that the striker will be named in the starting XI. This is another opportunity for teenager Adam Idah, who did an impressive job of replacing Pukki in the FA cup by scoring a hat trick.

Timm Klose has stepped up his recovery from a knee injury but will again miss out, while Ben Godfrey, Josip Drmic, Ralf Fahrmann and Dennis Srbeny are still out injured.

Possible XI: Krul; Aarons, Zimmermann, Hanley, Byram; Vrancic, Tettey; Buendia, McLean, Cantwell; Idah.

Manchester United vs Norwich Head to Head:

  • The Red Devils have won their last two encounters, but the Canaries recorded a 2-1 victory at Old Trafford in the Premier League during the 2015-16 campaign.
  • Norwich have three Premier League victories over United to their name, although United have won six of their last seven meetings in all competitions.
  • There have been over 2.5 goals in 5 of the last 7 meetings and Norwich City have failed to keep a clean sheet in all 7 meetings.
